ALLISON

They responded to the ransom, saying they agreed to pay. The kidnappers answered only that details would come tomorrow and that Liam would be kept safe for now.

“You need to rest,” Allison whispered into Demian’s ear, stroking his hair.

He was deep into planning with Serghei, and she could hear the exhaustion in his voice.

“She’s right,” Serghei said, “not just for sleep, but to slow your metabolism. The plan is mostly done. I’ll tie up a few loose ends and update you in the morning. Get some rest.”

She felt the tension tighten in Demian’s broad shoulders. She grabbed hold of his hand and started to pull him toward the bedroom.

“Serghei,” she said, “you’re welcome to sleep on the couch.... I’m sorry I don’t have a spare bed.”

Liam’s bed was painfully empty, but a two-hundred-plus-pound dragon was not going to fit on it.

“Sounds good,” Serghei said. “The sofa is full luxury compared to the places I often have to sleep on the job.”

She grabbed him some blankets and a spare toothbrush. Then she pulled Demian back into her bedroom and shut the door.

She’d cried a lot already, but that period of the grief was now over. Crying was like admitting both Liam and Demian were lost. These next hours were crucial, and she needed to keep Demian optimistic to give whichever plan they ended up going for the best chance of success. She needed to raise his spirits...to....

He grabbed hold of her, and his eyes locked onto her with ravenous hunger.

“Your metabolism,” she protested meekly. “The poison, it’s—”

“I need you,” he said, kissing her deep and warm.

She gasped for breath as his masculine scent overpowered her, as his strong hands grabbed hold of her, pulling her into him.

Their tongues touched and danced, and electricity surged through her body. She felt ecstatic tingling everywhere he touched her: her waist, her arms, her ass.

She pulled away from him, panting and breathless, but managed to say, “I can’t lose you.”

“You won’t,” he said, his voice solid and confident. “And I need you now, or I can’t sleep. If I don’t sleep, the poison will run through even faster. I need to feel all your curves, and I need to say the words.”

He looked deep into her, his green eyes burning into her. The heat from him radiating onto her, and he gripped her tightly with both hands. She waited with baited breath for him to say the words. She clutched his rock-hard waist, tracing the contour of his V-cut as he looked across her.

“I love you,” he said, “and I always will. I’ll always be here for you and for Liam. No poison can stop me, and no washed-up assassins can keep our boy from us.”

She stroked his hair, laughing and crying. She felt as happy as was possible given the circumstances. “I love you too, and I’m so sorry I held you away before.... I should have trusted my heart. I should have known you were the best man I’d ever know. The perfect father.
